Billups Injury Could Be Turning Point for Clippers

Injury to Billups is a gut check to Clippers

The recent injury to Chauncey Billups could easily pass as an excuse to a disappointing Clippers season.  Since joining Los Angeles on December 12th, he has been a central part of this team even though the spotlight doesn’t say so.  He not only brought production (14.9 points and 4 assists per game), he also brought a veteran leadership that worked wonders for a young Clippers team.

“He’s the best guard I’ve ever started with in the backcourt since I’ve been in the NBA” said Chris Paul.  “I trust him with everything, and that’s not just on the court. We need him, no question.”

When it was confirmed that he tore his Achilles tendon and would miss the rest of the 2012 season, I immediately thought ahead to the end of the season and what could come out of this.  There are two ways the team can go from here: either they lose focus as a result of Billups’ leadership on the court or this is used as motivation, Randy Foye picks up the slack (with some help from Mo Williams, and the Clips keep rolling.

Super Bowl Preview and Predictions

Brady and Manning have the opportunity to build upon their legacies

Ever since that Super Bowl in 2008 ended, I had this funny feeling that there had to be more to the story.  There’s no way it can just end like this, I thought.  The camera would pan to Tom Brady like some slasher from a horror movie that everyone thought was dead, and his eyes would open.  I just knew that it couldn’t end like that – there had to be a sequel to tie up the loose ends.  I can’t even count how many times I have heard fans talk about the unlikely Giants win in ’08 and dismiss it as “just a fluke.”  There was no way that the Belichick-Brady combo was through.  I expected some sort of rematch down the line but the way this story has played out, it feels less like a cheesy Halloween movie, and more like a much anticipated followup to a masterpiece ala The Godfather II.

Think about all of the storylines there are to play with, and how much of an impact this game will have on Manning and Brady’s legacies.  If New England exacts their revenge and comes out on top, it becomes very difficult to argue against Brady – and Belichick, for that matter – being the best ever. Of course he has earned a place among the all-time greats, and that won’t change, but don’t pretend that losing two Super Bowls against Eli Manning will be left out of the Brady biography when it is all said and done.

Schiano Will Right Tampa Bay’s Ship

Greg Schiano, new Head Coach for Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are about to be relevant again. After a terribly disappointing 2011 season, where the team finished 4-12 and ended the year on a 10 game losing streak, change was needed.  The team that came into the year with so much potential seemed to play without any sort of purpose, and rolled over in front of every single team they played down the stretch.  Raheem Morris was ousted at the end of the regular season and Tampa Bay brought in Rutgers’ Head Coach Greg Schiano to fill his shoes.  Schiano is the perfect man for the job.

As a Giants fan, I know first-hand how much of a difference a strong presence at head coach can make.  Tom Coughlin inherited a team from Jim Fassel that lacked discipline and motivation, and managed to instill those values into his team.  There was definitely a fair share of growing pains – as there will be with Schiano – but the results are there.
